Why I Chose to Become a Teacher

My name is Samuel Caballero, and I am pursuing a career in Health and Physical Education because I believe education has the power to make a lasting impact on a student’s life. Throughout my own educational journey, I have had teachers who invested in me, supported my growth, and helped shape the person I am today. Their influence showed me the importance of building meaningful relationships with students and creating an environment where they feel valued and supported. Having two younger sisters has also played an important role in my decision to teach, as it has strengthened my understanding of leadership, patience, and responsibility. It has shown me the importance of being a role model and the impact that guidance and support can have on young people. I want to be the kind of teacher who students know genuinely cares about them and their success, both in and out of the classroom.

Planning and Preparation

Planning and preparation serve as the foundation of effective teaching. As an aspiring Health and Physical Education teacher in Hawaiʻi, I understand that meaningful instruction begins long before students enter the classroom. Strong planning allows me to create lessons with clear objectives, intentional structure, and purposeful activities that support student learning and development. In Health and Physical Education, preparation is especially important because instruction involves movement, equipment management, safety procedures, and maximizing student participation within limited class time. My planning process begins by identifying learning objectives aligned with standards and student needs. From there, I build lessons that include skill progression, opportunities for practice, and assessments that allow me to monitor student understanding and engagement. I place strong value on creating lessons that are organized, relevant, and developmentally appropriate so that students can build confidence while improving their physical and health-related knowledge. Teaching in Hawaiʻi has also taught me the importance of flexibility in planning. Every class is different, and student needs can vary greatly. Whether adjusting for weather, space limitations, or student readiness, I believe preparation allows me to adapt while maintaining the integrity and purpose of the lesson.

The Classroom Environment

A positive classroom environment is essential for student growth, learning, and success. I believe students perform best when they feel safe, respected, and supported. In Health and Physical Education, creating this environment is especially important because students are often placed in situations that require vulnerability, teamwork, and active participation. Building an environment grounded in trust and respect allows students to feel comfortable taking risks, making mistakes, and improving. I strive to establish clear expectations, consistent routines, and accountability from the first day of class. Structure creates a sense of stability, while positive relationships create connection. I make it a priority to build rapport with students by learning their names, understanding their personalities, and showing genuine care for their progress and well-being. Growing up and teaching in Hawaiʻi has reinforced the value of community and respect for others. I aim to carry those values into my classroom by creating a space where students feel seen, heard, and valued. My goal is to build a classroom culture where effort, respect, and growth are emphasized over perfection.

Instruction

Instruction is the center of the teaching and learning process. My approach to instruction is grounded in engagement, active learning, and skill development. As a Health and Physical Education teacher, I believe students learn best when they are actively involved in the learning process and can connect what they are learning to their own lives. I use a variety of instructional strategies to support student learning, including direct instruction, guided practice, cooperative learning, and game-based learning. In physical education, it is important that instruction is clear, structured, and purposeful so students understand not only how to perform a skill, but why it is important. In health education, I focus on creating meaningful discussions and opportunities for reflection so students can make connections between content and their personal choices. I also believe effective instruction requires ongoing assessment. Through observation, questioning, and student feedback, I am able to monitor understanding and make adjustments when necessary to improve learning outcomes.

Professional Responsibilities

Professional responsibilities extend beyond teaching lessons and managing a classroom. They include collaboration, communication, professionalism, and a commitment to continuous growth. I believe that being an educator means contributing to the larger school community while continuously improving my own practice. Throughout my student teaching experience, I have worked closely with mentor teachers, faculty members, and school staff to strengthen my teaching and better support student learning. Collaboration has shown me the importance of learning from others and understanding that effective teaching is a collective effort. I am committed to professional growth and lifelong learning. Education is constantly evolving, and it is my responsibility to continue learning, reflecting, and adapting to better meet the needs of students. I also recognize the importance of advocating for Health and Physical Education as essential parts of student development and overall well-being.

REFLECTION & COMMITED TO DIVERSITY

Reflection has become one of the most important parts of my growth as an educator. It allows me to evaluate my teaching practices, assess student learning, and identify areas where improvement is needed. I believe effective teaching requires continuous self-evaluation because no lesson, class, or group of students is ever exactly the same. Through reflection, I have developed a greater awareness of my strengths and areas for growth, whether in lesson pacing, classroom management, student engagement, or instructional delivery. Taking time to reflect after lessons has helped me become more intentional in my decision-making and more responsive to the needs of my students. It has also strengthened my ability to adjust instruction and create better learning experiences based on student participation, understanding, and feedback. Reflection has also extended beyond the classroom through my experiences coaching PrimeTime basketball and volunteering at school pep rallies and student events. Coaching basketball taught me the importance of leadership, communication, and understanding that every student-athlete learns and develops differently. It reinforced the value of patience, adaptability, and meeting students where they are in order to help them improve. Volunteering at pep rallies and school activities allowed me to connect with students outside of the classroom setting and better understand the importance of school culture, student involvement, and building positive relationships. These experiences have helped shape my understanding that teaching goes beyond instruction—it is about building trust, creating connections, and being present in the larger school community. I am equally committed to creating an inclusive and equitable learning environment where all students feel respected, valued, and supported. Diversity in education includes differences in culture, background, ability, experiences, and learning styles, and I believe it is my responsibility as an educator to recognize and honor those differences. Growing up in Hawaiʻi has given me a strong appreciation for cultural diversity and the importance of community, respect, and inclusion. These values have shaped my teaching philosophy and continue to influence the way I approach my classroom environment. In my teaching practice, I strive to create lessons that are accessible to all students through differentiated instruction, modifications, and multiple opportunities for success. I believe every student deserves the opportunity to participate, grow, and feel successful regardless of their skill level or background. My goal is to create a learning environment where diversity is viewed as a strength, inclusion is intentional, and every student feels a true sense of belonging.
